United Kingdom First Adult Passport Application

uk_born_before_1983 = born in the UK before 1 January 1983 (birth/adoption certificate alone is sufficient); uk_born_on_or_after_1983 = born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983 (birth certificate plus a parent's nationality or immigration-status evidence is required); outside_uk_naturalised_or_registered = born outside the UK and already hold a certificate of naturalisation or registration; outside_uk_bot_citizen_born_before_1983 = born outside the UK, a British overseas territories citizen, before 1 January 1983; outside_uk_father_born_uk_before_1983 = born outside the UK before 1 January 1983 with a father born in the UK; outside_uk_born_on_or_after_1983 = born outside the UK on or after 1 January 1983 with a parent's British nationality evidence. Determines which further evidence fields are required.

Required for every nationalityEvidenceRoute except outside_uk_naturalised_or_registered (that route needs no birth certificate). For uk_born_on_or_after_1983 and the two outside_uk born-on/before-1983 routes that name a parent, the certificate must show the parents' details. Original documents only; photocopies are not accepted.

Required only when nationalityEvidenceRoute is outside_uk_bot_citizen_born_before_1983, in addition to birthOrAdoptionCertificate and passportUsedToEnterUK.

Required only when nationalityEvidenceRoute is outside_uk_father_born_uk_before_1983, alongside birthOrAdoptionCertificate, parentsMarriageCertificate, and passportUsedToEnterUK.

Required only when nationalityEvidenceRoute is uk_born_on_or_after_1983. The source states you need your birth/adoption certificate 'and either' nationality_evidence (a parent's own UK nationality documents) or immigration_status_evidence (evidence of a parent's UK immigration status at the time of your birth).

Required when parentEvidenceType is nationality_evidence (route uk_born_on_or_after_1983). If you send documents relating to your father, you must also provide parentsMarriageCertificate.

Required when parentEvidenceType is nationality_evidence (route uk_born_on_or_after_1983), and also when nationalityEvidenceRoute is outside_uk_born_on_or_after_1983 (that route's own, textually narrower 'evidence of one parent's British nationality' requirement). uk_birth_or_adoption_certificate = the named parent's own full UK birth or adoption certificate; naturalisation_or_registration_certificate = the named parent's certificate of naturalisation or registration; british_passport_valid_at_applicants_birth = the named parent's British passport that was valid when the applicant was born; british_passport_number_only = only the parent's British passport number, where the passport itself is no longer available.

Required when parentEvidenceType is immigration_status_evidence (route uk_born_on_or_after_1983): for example, a foreign passport belonging to one of your parents that was valid when you were born.

Required when parentNationalityEvidenceParent is father (route uk_born_on_or_after_1983), and always required when nationalityEvidenceRoute is outside_uk_father_born_uk_before_1983.

Required when nationalityEvidenceRoute is outside_uk_naturalised_or_registered. The certificate must already have been issued before applying; a first-time application cannot be made while naturalisation or registration is still pending.

Required for every outside_uk_* nationalityEvidenceRoute (outside_uk_naturalised_or_registered, outside_uk_bot_citizen_born_before_1983, outside_uk_father_born_uk_before_1983, outside_uk_born_on_or_after_1983): the passport (own or, if included as a child on a parent's passport, that parent's foreign passport) used to travel to the UK.

Must be 18 or over, live in the UK, and have known the applicant personally for at least 2 years as a friend, neighbour, or colleague (not just a professional acquaintance); must currently work in, or be retired from, a recognised profession. Cannot be a relative by birth or marriage, a partner, or someone who lives at the same address as the applicant; cannot work for HM Passport Office or for UK Visas and Immigration on British citizenship or right-of-abode applications; and cannot be a doctor unless they know the applicant personally as a good friend.

british = a current UK passport; irish = a current Irish passport. The online identity-confirmation step requires the confirmer to live in the UK and hold one of these unconditionally — unlike the separate paper-form countersignatory process, it has no overseas-confirmer variant accepting other nationalities (out of scope for this document; see VERIFICATION.md).
